Experience 2 – Learning a New Sport (Basketball) | Activity

We are taught different sports in school out of which one of them is football. Until grade 10, I was learning football as a sport; in grade 11, CAS gave me the opportunity to learn a new sport, basketball. I enjoyed the sport so much that I started playing basketball even outside of school. My basketball school coach, Mr. Krushi Desai has helped me develop a lot of skills and techniques to improve my game. Enjoying the sport so much and seeing how much I have improved I decided to continue playing it for the remainder of my school year.

LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Over the six months that I played basketball in school, I was able to identify that I am good at taking leadership in the team. Being teammates we all respected each other equally, even though there were many players in the team that played better than me, they listened to me when I assigned them positions to play and gave them any suggestions. After playing I realized that I would get tired very soon. I could work on improving my stamina, endurance and speed to keep up with my teammates in the game.

LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

I developed gross motor skills through my journey of learning a new sport as I tried to practice the set of drills my coach provided us with. I also improved my non-verbal communication skills with my teammates, as it was an important part of the game to be able to communicate with them without giving a clue to the opponent.

LO 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

There were specific sports slots allotted in my school where our coach teaches us to play the sport. It really helped me give enough time in learning the sport. After gaining interest, I tried devoting more of my time to the sport by even practicing outside at least three to four times a week.

LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

To improve my skills and ability, it was very much necessary to provide commitment towards the experience. It is very difficult to develop endurance and increase speed. To do so, it required me to devote time and as I mentioned earlier, I tried practicing outside of school for at least three to four times a week.
