Gardening. (Service and activity)

Gardening has been my father’s hobby and I always wanted to learn a few things about gardening and plantation. My home is surrounded by different types of plants and I was always fascinated by them hence, I took up CAS as an opportunity to start gardening and planting a few things in the backyard. Initially, I observed my father planting a Devil’s ivy and neem plant. My father told me I should initially start gardening by already grown plants rather than starting from seeds. He got me a devil’s ivy and a few other creepers. I planted them in a vertical garden while we were renovating the front area of our home. There were 4 to 5 different types of plants in the vertical garden. After planting in the vertical garden, we got other hanging pots and planted other creepers.

Learning outcomes:

LO2: Demonstrate the challenges that have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process. Initially, I knew nothing about gardening or plantation. After observation in the first few tries, I failed to put the plant in the proper place in the soil and give it the right amount of water but eventually, I learned the right way to put the plant in the pot and the right amount of water required according to the pot and the plant.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience: I started the CAS experience by just helping and observing my father plant a few plants in my garden as a recreational activity on weekends. I wanted to learn more and hence I planned to take CAS as an opportunity to learn different things about planting. Planting was very fun and engaging and very relaxing but difficult.

LO4: Show commitment to and preserving to CAS experience. Planting and gardening were very good relaxing recreational activities for me and I would like to grow a plant from its seeds and learn more. Growing a plant from its seeds is quite difficult at the location where I live but it is possible. The vertical garden at my home has almost 30 mini pots and it was difficult planting them all but we did 5 to 7 each day and eventually completed the whole vertical gardening in the week. It currently has 4 to 5 different types and colors of plants. I water those plants on weekdays sometimes and on weekends.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance: In the current world with rising temperatures and decreasing water levels worldwide. It is important for each of us to plant more and more trees and plants every day as part of our recreational activity because the more trees we plant the better for our planet Earth.

I faced a few difficulties during the process such as I was unable to water the plants daily because of a hectic schedule and the plant almost died but somehow survived. I was unable to put the plant in the soil properly so one of the creepers died. It was very difficult in the beginning and even now I am not able to do everything properly but It is better than before. I managed my schedule after school and in the early morning on weekends.
