Theory of knowledge (TOK) is an integral component in the IB diploma. It helps the students to reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on areas of knowledge. It helps us to identify deeper knowledge and makes us acquainted with the complexity of knowledge.

While being on the organizing committee of the TOK exhibition, a student-led event, I had to come up with creative ideas and had to solve various problems arising during the planning stage of the event. To solve these problems, I had to work on teachers’ feedback and had to go through constant disapproval if the solution wasn’t good enough. This way I learned to think of better ideas. I was able to share my ideas and opinions and contribute to my team by working collaboratively with all the members. Due to this, we were able o complete the even successfully and I was able to contribute to this even because of my strengths.

I don’t have good creative skills, hence, the creative part of this event was a challenge for me as I had to draw and paint many decorations. However, I was able to overcome this issue by working collaboratively and taking help from the other team members. I learned to draw and paint gradually throughout the length of this event. I also gained crucial feedback on my work which helped me develop my creative skills and improve my drawing and painting.

We had to constantly adapt to change throughout the event as there were a lot of changes to the schedule and plan of the event due to feasibility issues. The changes helped me come up with new ideas and further develop my critical thinking skills as I had to think of new ideas in dynamic situations.

I was working with 13 other people from my grade; being in the organizing committee, I had to manage my team and had to assign roles to people. I also had to make crucial decisions and listen to my team members’ ideas and work collaboratively. As a leader, I had to give everyone a chance to express their ideas on the event and had to consider everyone’s opinions before making crucial decisions. This event helped me improve my leadership skills and helped me become a better leader and manager.

While planning and designing the event, we made sure that we used sustainable and re-usable materials for decorations. This helped us reduce the overall cost and the carbon footprint of the event. The supervisors of the event did not want the team to use a lot of paper and use other materials for decorations; this expectation was successfully met by reusing old paper rather than new paper. Also, the decorations were safely stored after the completion of the event. We had to make ethical choices while choosing the resources for this event which made this event sustainable and interactive. Planning this event was a fun task for all of us, however, we made sure that we use our time and resources efficiently and effectively.

We focused on issues of global significance by focusing on the sustainable development goal ” Responsible consumption and production ” by reusing old resources and then saving the decorations for future years so that they won’t have to use new resources for the exhibition.

The event was a great way to make the TOK exhibition unique and different. It helped me develop new skills and learn new ideas and creative management that I will be using in the future.
