Beach Cleaning

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

This CAS experience involved a lot of planning and preparations, as I had a group of people who had been a part of cleaning the beach with me. Considering taking a group of people in the times of the pandemic, this experience needed specific planning and preparations, such as arranging resources like gloves, sanitizers, garbage bags, etc., and also disposing of the garbage once we have cleaned and also following the COVID protocol at the same time. This helped me explore and develop leadership skills that will help me in the future as well, while leading or even being a part of a group.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

This experience also demanded a good amount of commitment from our team, because we had to be committed and clean the beach more than once, and also we had to be committed to complete the whole experience from managing all the resources and collecting the garbage to correctly then disposing the garbage, and considering the COVID pandemic scenario we also had to follow the protocols needed with utmost integrity and commitment. Though it wasn’t really easy to be committed to this experience, considering how time-consuming it was, our group stayed committed to complete the whole experience which also helped us bring some change to this world.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working with a group gets never easy for anyone, but this experience demanded a group of people to work together, which would help bring a change at a bigger level and also would help us to be committed towards our goal to clean the beaches. Through this experience, our group had a clash of opinions regarding selecting the beach to clean and also while managing the required resources. Yet, working together helped to reduce the efforts to be put by each group member, and work at a bigger level to bring a more impactful change, which also encouraged us to work collaboratively.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Having beaches filled with garbage is an issue that should be addressed, because this garbage then contributes to pollution of both land and water, leading to a contaminated environment. Our group came across this issue over a tup to the beach which helped us acknowledge the severity of the issue and self-actualize our mistakes and force us to think about bringing some change as soon as possible. Hence, we as a group had planned to engage with this issue and had tried to bring some change in the world, which made us all delighted and encouraged us to do it more.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

We often forget to take care of the environment we live in. Making change is necessary and even if one person evaluates one’s action and acts to correct it will help bring a larger change than we expect. This actualization hit our group which forced us to bring some change and prevented us from littering beaches or any place for that matter, after this experience.

Overall, this experience helped us to critically think about our actions as responsible citizens towards nature and understand our roles as a human to bring change and not harm nature with our actions, and helped the environment to be a bit cleaner than before.
