Waste2Wealth Volunteering

The Waste2Wealth program was conducted by a Surat NGO, the global issue that they focused on is waste segregation and helped the pedestrians gain knowledge on the same to make a change in the society. I volunteered on weekends for the fieldwork, we went to different societies to approach people from each floor personally and encourage them to segregate their waste as suggested (dry, wet, and hazardous waste.)

LO5-
Working with other volunteers in this experience was easy, we all were the same age so we were able to interact better. We divided up our roles and responsibilities for the floors we had to take, performing this activity was easy considering that we were working in an adaptable environment. It was necessary to work collaboratively, the reason being we were all representing a common NGO, it increased the productivity of work as we were able to approach at least 60 people each day and show them how they are supposed to segregate the waste.

LO6-
The global issue that we engaged in was the Sustainable environment. We aimed to segregate the daily waste into three categories to be precise: dry, wet, hazardous. We explained to them the reason behind this initiative for them to understand the importance of it and how crucial it is for the sustainability of the environment since the usage of plastic and chemical-based materials is uncontrollably increasing.
This experience personally helped me develop my view of the world and how much we can do to change it, knowing the cruciality of waste segregation motivated me to make a change and take an action. Realizing that my involvement can have a small change was what led me to volunteer in this program.

LO7-
The ethical issues involved were the responsibilities that every citizen upholds to protect the environment in any way possible, people don’t understand that segregating waste can diminish diverse global issues like air and water pollution, climate change, effects of ecosystem and species, landfills, etc. The issue made me feel that I was partly responsible for not taking the initiative before, I didn’t have the knowledge or the motivation to be the change in society after joining the Waste2Wealth program, my whole point of view changed.

Final takeaway-
Volunteering in this program made my weekends a lot more productive and encouraging people to segregate their waste helped me gain knowledge on the importance of it and influenced me to do the same.
