Learning Punjabi (CAS experience 6- Riya Bajaj)

I was curious to know about my culture and I always asked my grandparents to teach me. then I thought learning a language will help me better understand a new culture. Then I decided to learn Punjabi for my CAS experience as it will help me stay consistent and give me insights into my own culture. I decide to learn Punjabi to level which will allow me to comprehend, speak, basic writing. I decided to learn Punjabi through a tutor. The service improved my speaking, listening , and comprehension skills in Punjabi.

Learning outcome 2:Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken to develop new skills,
Learning a new language is very difficult. Punjabi is similar to Hindi in terms of writing. So initially it’s difficult for me to understand what is written. While speaking there were times when half of the sentences wherein Hindi and half in Punjabi which made it confusing for me but gradually I will be able to step up from this stage after regular practice. Since the classes happens rarely due to other responsibilities of the supervisor teaching me it is difficult to keep up with the teacher. I haven’t learned any language before this, Gujarati we were taught but I was not able to since I did not give effort. Learning this new skill of learning a new language is helpful since it improves memory and it makes it easier for me to converse with my elders in Punjabi in front of someone who does not understand Punjabi. Now finally I have started to understand conversation in Punjabi and now I am learning to converse and soon to write This skill makes me feel proud since I will be able to converse in my cultural language.

Learning outcome 3:initiate and plan a CAS experience
It is difficult to keep up with studies side by side also manage to learn altogether a new language. I made a timetable so it does not hamper my studies and also kept in mind to give time to myself as well. I am a half organized person where I plan things but times it does not happen the way it’s planned. While doing this activity I learned new skill of managing time and living a balanced life. The planning and initiating of this activity is helpful as being a Punjabi it will make me feel proud to my know religious language. Moreover initiating and planning helps to make you an organized person and knowing about planning reduces the complexcity also teaches you skill such as self-management.

Learning outcome 4:commitment to and perseverance
Even though there were times when I had no mood and did not wish to do the task still somehow managed and showed the commitment to complete the experience. Hindi and Punjabi are quite similar so it was difficult to learn and the venue where I learned was far away from my home so there were times where I wished to skip it but due to the commitment to completing I kept myself motivated. This experience requires regular practice but twice a week makes it difficult to remember what was taught in the last class. Additionally, I as a person easily can commit to things but while performing I end up being lazy and either skip it but when knowing it’s important I drag myself to complete the activity and yet enjoy doing it.

All in all, throughout this activity I have developed a learner profile Balanced to manage between studies, learning Punjabi-, self-time-, and as well as a physical workout. This activity helps to preserve the Punjabi culture by learning it. I did not find speaking Punjabi important but my values change being a Punjabi it’s important for me to learn to speak. The activity is not yet completed it’s in the process hence it can be considered partially finished but I will finish it by end of April. Leaning Punjabi and trying to implement it at home. I would dedicate more time to complete it in short time period and also it would be easier for me to remember learnings from previous classes. The completion would make me feel relaxed proud and sense of accomplishment. In the future, I will communicate with my family members in Punjabi for preserving the culture
