Beach cleaning (Service).

Beach is a peaceful and beautiful place to relax your mind. For me as an individual, I love beaches because the waves are peaceful and calming but it is not very peaceful and calming when the beaches look like trash bins. I visited Dumas beach with few of my friends and observed that a lot of harmful waste is being disposed on the beach and in the water body. We also observed that the stalls created more waste such as plastic, polythene bags, wrappers, etc. We decided to clean the beach on our next coming visit as a service to the environment. We cleaned the beach for 2 to 3 weekends in our free time and collected a huge amount of waste and disposed in the dustbin.

Learning outcomes:

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience – In the beginning, me and my friends had to collabrate with each other and buy some resources such as gloves and garbage bags. The CAS experience idea was initiated with the help of a collabrative obervation and personal experience. In all the visits, we gathered 2 wholes bags of garbage from the beach and some from the water. We required more numbers of gloves and more number of garbage bages as the plan moved forward. I learned that a service action can also be created through our personal experience.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recongnizee the benefits of working collabratively – Cleaning a whole beach is not a one man job and the amount of trash we collected cannot be collected with one person. The CAS experience being a collabrative action became more easier as we were able to cover more area and cleaned larger in shorter time period. We communicated, collabrated and distributed our areas for cleaning and made 2 pairs.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance – The issue that we catered to is a local problem for the species living in the area as well as the humans indirectly. We focused on protecting the environment and species living on the beach and in the water. Plastic was the most found material on the beach and plastic is the most harmful to the environment as stray dogs and pet dogs on the beach can consume plastic unknowingly, the species living under the water such as fishes can consume the contents of plastic and can be harmful to them as well as the humans as they consume fishes. It is essential for us to ensure cleanliness at all places for us and everyone around us.

It was difficult to find common free timings but we picked a time when everyone is free and it is easy for everyone to join for the beach cleaning and we successfully completed our CAS experience.

Sustainable development goal : Life on Earth and Life below water.
