Crumple

Every year , thousands of trees are cut down to make paper. Even though the world has the capacity of recycling almost every bit of paper , very less amount of it is actually recycled. This makes the deforestation rates even worse and it further contributes to many problems , creating a big question mark on sustainable development. In an attempt to find a solution to this problem , I volunteered at ” Crumple ” which is a paper making workshop. Here, we recycled papers and made new ones out of it. The papers were further binded into a book and were donated to the needy ones.Apart from this , I also developed some new creative skills during the process.

LOs:

LO2:Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
This activity was new to me, I learnt how to make recycled paper. The process included many steps, while some were pretty easy, some were hard to complete. For instance, one of the steps was where we had to place the wet paper from the woden mould on to cloth so that it could dry , initially , the paper used to tear and I had to do it again but gradually I understood the technique and was able to do it properly.

LO5:Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The paper making workshop was conducted in groups and working collaboratively turned out to be productive. Since the process includes several steps , all the volunteers divided the same and the work became a lot more productive. Teamwork was an important aspect because without it the process would have become a lot more difficult and lengthy. This would have decreased the productivity.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
Irresponsible use of resources is a significant problem today as it contributes to problems like pollution and climate change. Resources like papers are made from trees. Since paper is a daily use product, many trees are cut down because of it and it further harms the environment. On the other hand, Crumple reuses old papers and makes new papers out of it.This process saves a lot of trees and supports UN sustainable development goals like SDG 11(Sustainable cities and communities) , SDG 12(responsible consumption and production) and SDG 15( life on land)

LO7: Ethics of choices and actions
In our daily life we tend to use papers without thinking about what impact it has on the environment. By being a part of crumple , I was able to reflect on the choices I make and how i contribute to pollution and other harmful activities. My contribution to this activity was ethical as it was towards the betterment for the environment.
