Learning kudo for Self Defense

For this experience, I joined a class for Kudo which is a mixed martial art that teaches safety and practicality. I attended about 20-25 classes in total and I learnt a lot throughout the duration of this experience. Since I have no prior experience of martial arts, the instructor initially focused on teaching basic punches and kicks and then elaborating on techniques specific to Kudo. L1, L2, L4, L5, L6

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

With the help of my instructor/supervisor, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. Due to good flexibility, I was able to perform good kicks but lacked adequate strength when it came to throwing punches. I felt more capable when I was able to identify my weaknesses and work on them to actually improve my performance. Gradually, I started to feel more confident and felt that if someone tried to attack me I am relatively more prepared to fight them off.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

The main challenge for me was the physical fitness required for kudo classes. Due to my lifestyle during the pandemic, I had reduced physical movement and therefore when I joined the class I used to get tired very easily. One day a new teacher came and made us undergo rigorous training and exercise which left me sore for days. However, with time I started to enjoy this challenge and built up my strength and stamina with the help of my supervisor. I started to actually feel more energetic and pumped up throughout the day.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

One of the instances when perseverance and commitment was when I had an increase in workload from school, these attributes were particularly needed during the week in which I had continuous summative assessments. I often felt like skipping kudo classes and staying home to study and prepare for my test but I showed perseverance and went to class. This actually proved beneficial to me because I was able to clear my mind, reduce stress and put my full focus in studying when I did so after class.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The issue I can connect this to is Women’s safety. My concern for my own safety was my main reason behind embarking this experience. As a young girl living in India, I have often been scared to walk home or go out at night. This is a common case with many people worldwide, through learning Kudo I have learnt self-defense techniques and built my strength which makes me feel safer and slightly more secure when it comes to situations where my safety could be at risk.

Here is some evidence from kudo classes:
