Crumple, an initiative to recycle the waste paper to make new papers. Reusing and recycling paper helps reduce pollution and through this paper waste would be reduces. From the crumple paper books would be made which would be then donated to NGOs and also would be distributed in our School. By volunteering at Crumple I was able to help the environment and learn a new technique.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
I have never tried paper making before and initially I thought that this would be very difficult. However with participating in this event, helped me develop new skills and learn paper recycling. Learning this skills would help me in future as now instead of throwing the paper, I would try and recycle them. One of the challenges I faced, was the process. It was very time-consuming and hence, could not be done in school hours. Hence, I went for early in and completed it.
LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working collaboratively is always a better option and for this event it was very helpful. One or two people won’t have made significant number of papers. But working with a group we made more than 100 papers in one day. This was the product of teamwork and would not have been done without everyone present.
LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Climate change and pollution are a major global issues. This experience helped me try and solve this problem. While. normally making paper would require wood, water and chemicals, handmade papers are an eco-friendly alternative. These papers are made from old used papers. This alternative ensures that environment is not impacted and helps reduce pollution. Along with this, the event helped bring a change and focused on SDG goals 12(Responsible consumption and production) and 13(Climate actions). Goal 12 by reducing the waste created and increasing recycled product. Goal 13 by decreasing waste and reducing pollution, which would help bring a decline in climate change.
LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Small choices like wasting or recycling paper have a major impact on our environment. Recycling paper might seem like a very small step but its very helpful for a greater problem of deforestation. Each year billions of trees are being cut, this is a major threat for the life on earth. By taking part in this event I was able to take action for the environment which as ethical as well as beneficial for our surroundings. Along with this I got to know that the only solution for deforestation isn’t planting more trees, but it can also be reusing the products that are made from trees.
Final takeaway
Learner Profiles developed: Knowledgeable, Caring and Reflective
This event even helped me reflect on my subject knowledge of Environmental Systems and Societies, about what are the possible threats to biodiversity and how can we conserve it. All in all, this event helped me bring a change towards the environment and motivated me to continue doing it.
